PART TIME GREEN - Time for a tough question. Should police drive gas guzzlers in 2009
Time for a tough question. Should police drive gas guzzlers in 2009
Would a Civic hybrid make more economic sense and be in more keeping with the times?

In Europe and other parts of the world the police tend to at least attempt to drive economical cars, not so in North America.  They favor the Ford Crown Victoria Police Car or other fuel hogs without debate, or so it seems.

Putting a side other police requirements or legacy issues with replacement.  Should we not ask the question. Can we make a better choice for police vehicle that is forward thinking and much better on gas. The average police car drives 5000 - 10000 miles per month. On the Crown Vic that equal. (using combined 17 MPG) and just 5000 miles, burns 295 gallons per month the same mileage in the hybrid civic burns just 119 gallons per month.

With Gasoline at $2.50 per/g that is a savings of $513 Dollars per month  - using only conservative numbers and with oil at historic lows.

That money could and should be put to better use.  In addition, there is the matter of police cars idling.  Using hybrids would cause less environmental impact.

1995 Ford Crown Victoria Police

Fuel Type Regular MPG (city) 15

MPG (highway) 20 MPG

(Combined) 17 MPG

2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

(Combined) 42 MPG

We boys love our toys. But it is time for us to change our bad attitudes. For the love of the planet.

You guys miss the point. They should not be "idling" lying in wait, because it is bad for the environment. They should not be cruising around pointlessly. They should be on bikes or on foot, walking the beat and meeting the people, sort of like the old days. And forget about the souped up cars.

It is time to ask some questions. In France they use a wide array of vehicles, mostly Peugeot. However, Fuji heavy Industries has just won a contract to supply the Subaru Impreza as high speed chase cars. Impressive. And that poses another yet question, re chases.
