Friends and Family !
Recently, I was awarded a fellowship to pursue development work within the confines of southern India. The projects consist of environmental promotion to support community endeavors to generate income - ( I can elaborate but more information is posted within the urls). I will be committed to this program for one year beginning August 2009.
This is an excellent opportunity to finally expand upon my current skill-set in public health, community outreach and science-based knowledge. I am writing this small missive in hopes for YOU to support me along this journey. Your support – emotionally, financially, or didactically – will be understandably necessary. The fellowship covers materials such as housing and domestic travel but large items need to be individually met – health insurance, visa, airfare and etc.
To support these community efforts, I have set-up a pay-pal account. Understanding that the economy sucks, any monetary support (in rupees, quid, euros and bucks) will be wonderful! I have also created another email account to those who would like to contribute via snail-mail - sashtienpondy@gmail.com.
More information about the project, my host city and the NGO are listed below:

Please please Please forward this message to fellow interested souls. (or any random person you meet works well too!)
endearing wishes,
Sashti

There is a link to an article in the Buffalo News.
The hustle and bustle of Mumbai rekindled my joy of a New York City avenue — the noise, high-rises and ubiquitous people. The excitement was palpable, and immersing in these similarities fondly reminded me of my home in Western New York. My visit here was unplanned, which allowed me to fully explore the vibrancy of this metropolis.
A local organization allowed me to conduct an educational session on geography for children living in a nearby slum...

UPDATE: I have reached nearly three-fourths of my goal and want to thank all who have provided support for this cause! I am leaving shortly for the fellowship but will keep the pay-pal link on-line for those individuals still interested in supporting these endeavors.
In loving appreciation, Savard...

Problem in India
In India at least eight separate agencies from the city, state and federal level oversee various aspects, alternately competing for funds and passing the buck when public anger reaches a boiling point.

The federal recovery plan and its emphasis on green job creation can stimulate thousands of jobs. Examples include tree cutting and pruning, bicycle repair, public transit, recycling, furniture making, building construction, manufacturing, food production, auto repair, and energy efficiency retrofits on homes.
Wishing you a success in India with the project!

Chris – These projects consist of environmental promotion, health & safety behavioral changes, community outreach, income generation and language immersion in French and Tamil. The time spent in southern India will provide a greater understanding on issues relating to sustainability and environmental justice. This fellowship provides the ability to obtain tangible field experience – something which is not easily performed within the academic setting.
This opportunity will be used to possibly kick start a career in global health. Additionally, enough time should be made available to pursue side initiatives ranging from water management, urban design and instructional projects at university and school.
Hope this helped
